The Very Best of Robert Service

by Robert W. Service, illustrated by Jon Van Zyle

Paperback

Robert Service poetry comes to life in this volume which includes five of the Gold Rush bard's best: The Cremation of Sam McGee, The Law of the Yukon, The Shooting of Dan McGrew, The Spell of the Yukon, and Bessie's Boil.

Now for the first time an Alaskan publisher has put more than 100 of the poems of the British-born, Scottish-raised and Canadian-working balladeer into a single tome.  Ironically, Service spent most of his life in the South of France with his French wife living on the prosperity his Gold Rush poetry brought him.  While thousands of writers in the last century have become rich, Service is that most rare of scribes-- a poet who found his fortune in writing.  Not only does the book portray the trials and tribulations of Gold Rush pioneers, but also his days in France and serving in the American Ambulance Corps during World War I.
